The blankets of mysore, india, were famous for their fine, soft texture. But it wasn't really popular or used to any great extent until the late 1920s when it was the focus of a cottage industry around dalton, georgia, where cotton was the major crop. In design, chinese carpets are literal; that is, designs are rarely decorative but have an exact meaning. This results in a tightly packed, stable fabric.

In embroidery, a needle and thread are used to create designs on fabric. With a movement to produce embroidered pictures ("needle painting") that would achieve the luminous quality of paintings by contemporary artists such as the flemish painter jan van eyck, the use of gold led to the burgundian technique called or nu (shaded gold) embroidery.

The leaders of fashion copied the more practical and convenient dress of the laboring classes. When the embroidery industry began the move into electronic multihead lockstitch embroidery machines the mass production of chenille was left to the skilled operators manually producing chenille products as they had for years. Because the spreads we use are 100% cotton the finished product is soft soothing and bright.

Crinolines gave way to hoops, which were followed by two types of bustles. One characteristic technique was void satin stitch, in which the rows of satin stitch are separated by a narrow strip of background material. Looper drive, z-axis drive (needle and looper synchronization), and ath (automatic thread trimming) were now driven by pulse motors. Pile fabrics may be produced also by weaving two pile fabrics face to face and then cutting them apart.

Look at a piece of velvet or corduroy; it'll be smooth in one direction and darker and plusher in the other. Reminiscent of the beach on a sunny day, this bright and vibrant 10 feet by 10 feet square braided area rug is an explosion of colors destined to highlight any floor. Experiment; try different fabric combinations; mix & match a variety of embellishment techniques. It is not necessary to be perfectly precise: Stitching lines can be a little crooked & cutting lines can be a bit off-center.

Rugs produced there have vivid colors of light blue, yellow-green, and raspberry red; central geometric motifs or medallions; and stylized plant designs reminiscent of those in late coptic tapestries. The rich chenille fabric of these pillows provides a comforting texture. Many styles of embroidery exist. The ducky has an orange beak and a blue flower on his neck.

It's easy to use, too! First you remove and discard the tear-away backing.
